What We Believe

Theology.

The word brings excitement in the same way someone might get excited about drywall. Theology is for ivory tower professors or grandiose thinkers out of touch with the common person. Right?

We disagree. Theology is the study of God, and God's relationship with the world. As followers of Christ, we feel passionate about knowing God's relationship to us, to our brothers and sisters in greater Denver, to people groups throughout the world, even his relationship to the physical world and how we treat our environment. Theology informs how we think about God, ourselves, people around us, and the world at large. It informs how we participate and act in relationship with God and all that surrounds us.

Theology, importantly, is study. It is not a set of rules describing how God is supposed to act. Theology is both solid and flexible. It is solid when it offers truths our entire community agrees with and experiences (such as we are on a journey with Christ because of his love and work for us) but flexible in the nuances of how we think and act will change 10 years from now (such as worship style, how to serve our community, or even our own personal image of God as Father). If we desire to continue growing ourselves and reaching an ever-changing world these nuances must change. Our values statement presents aspects of how our theology is to be lived out. As we grow and change it, too, could change. We have done our best, however, to present our beliefs of the solid parts of Christian Spirituality.

The Gathering is part of the greater community of Christians at New Hope Community Church.

The Gathering believes in the statements of the ancient creeds, and what writers such as C.S. Lewis have called Mere Christianity. We hold to the classic Christian theologies affirmed by believers in the triune God and followers of Jesus, the Son of God, throughout history.

Along with the New Hope Community, we affirm and operate within the traditions and theology of the Reformed Church in America denomination.
